Origins of Rasna Extra Virgin Olive Oil

In 1998, Dario Castagno and his friend Stefano Paganelli, who shared his passion for olive oil, conspired to supply precious olio novo – extracted from hand-picked, premium olives – to individuals living overseas.

“To be able to do this within a few days of its pressing and with door-to-door delivery,” says Castagno, “we had to go through a whole series of bureaucratic gyrations, including permits, certificates, and all other kinds of red tape. We were also well aware that due to the scarce quantity produced from the local trees, making a consistent profit would be improbable; but our goal was only to break even, and to provide an annual supply for our own families.”

Dario and Stefano decided to dedicate their “green gold” to the people who had most likely initiated olive growing in Tuscany, the Etruscans, who called themselves “Rasna.” They also vowed to cut through whatever red tape necessary to make their venture work. “So,” recalls Dario, “over a stewed rabbit and a bottle of wine, the Rasna project was born.”

Ten years later, with increased production finally a reality, Laura Grover has joined the Rasna team as Sales & Marketing Director in the United States, responsible for establishing and supplying to a select clientele of establishments and individuals.
