IGP/Organic and Rasna

Explaining IGP and What Organic Means

The Italian certification IGP – Identificazione Geografica Protetta – literally translated means “protected geographical identification.” The seal is only awarded to products that possess determined quality characteristics that depend primarily on the location in which they originate, and, if applicable, from the area in which they have further been transformed. The foremost reason for displaying the IGP seal is to guarantee customers that they are receiving an authentic, high quality product. It is also certification of excellence as determined by the European Common Market.

In addition to the IGP commendation, Rasna Extra Virgin Olive Oil has also been certified organic by the U.S.D.A. Rasna believes that olive oil a vital element for balanced nutrition, and is committed to only supplying an organic product, endowing the oil’s nutritive benefits with healthy production. The rules governing an organic product relate to the cultivation, picking and pressing of the olives, as well as the bottling and labeling of the oil.

  • The olives must be cultivated without the use of chemical fertilizer. The fertilization of the soil can only be maintained through the use of organic compost derived from organic production.

  • Any diseases or threats to the olive trees can only be dealt with using natural methods, and only in extreme cases may bland pesticides (i.e., jellies, sulfur, etc.) be used.

  • Cultivation may only be deemed organic if the olives are harvested from soils that have not used any chemical fertilizers for at least two years.

  • An organic olive oil can only be “extra virgin,” which means it must have less than 0.8% acidity, and must be devoid or any defects or flavor flaws.
